    1. Gather everything before you start.


    Having your tools ready before you begin makes the process smoother and less likely to be rushed or abandoned halfway through. You will need nail polish remover, cotton, a file, nail clippers, a warm bowl of water, cuticle nippers, a buffer, wood cuticle sticks, your base coat, color and top coat, a cuticle and nail serum, and a good hand lotion. Laying everything out first means you are not hunting through drawers mid-manicure with wet nails.

    2. Remove old polish with acetone-free remover when possible.

    Acetone-based removers work quickly but are harsh on the nail plate and surrounding skin, especially with repeated use. Soak a cotton pad and rub each nail with an up and down motion rather than a circular scrub. Take a moment to check the condition of each nail before moving on, this is where you will notice peeling, discoloration, or damage that needs attention.

    3. Cut and file before you soak, never after.


    Wet nails are significantly more fragile than dry ones and far more prone to tearing and breakage when cut or filed. Clip nails starting at the sides rather than cutting straight across the middle. File in one direction only rather than back and forth, and use a glass or metal file if your nails are thin or fragile. Follow with a buffer to smooth the surface and edges, which also helps nail polish adhere longer.

    4. Soak your hands to soften cuticles.


    Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil or a small amount of gentle soap. Warm water softens dead skin and makes cuticle removal much easier and less uncomfortable. Soak for three to five minutes then use a wood cuticle stick to gently push cuticles back and remove any loosened debris before using cuticle nippers carefully on dead skin only, never on live tissue.

    9. Give your nails real rest between manicures.


    Continuous polish application without breaks, especially dark colors, causes nails to yellow and weaken over time.
